Atlanta, GA (November 22, 2022) – The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) announced the establishment of the new Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) in Danville, Virginia where a US Navy Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) will be established. Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA) was selected as part of a consortium of industry experts to support this new initiative for additive manufacturing.
The 51,250-square-foot, $28.8 million CMA facility, with a consortium of companies, will attract new businesses and jobs to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The collaborating companies, led by Austal USA, will create technical data packages focused on innovation and efficiency in manufacturing of parts and components for submarine industrial base.
IIA will open an on-site inspection lab to provide a variety of non-destructive testing (NDT) services by highly skilled Level III and Level II experts to validate the quality of additive manufactured parts for submarines.
IIA is part of a team of industrial partners, industry experts and government entities working together to support the AM COE in its efforts to accelerate and scale defense manufacturing. By bringing multiple functions under one roof, the AM COE aims to improve efficiencies and streamline the supply chain.
“This partnership will diversify, transform and grow Southern Virginia’s production capability for the Submarine Industrial Base as well, marking another major win for Virginia’s defense economy and labor market.” Said Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Chris Niebuhr, CEO of IIA, commented “We’re proud to support the Navy and IALR’s initiative to build an advanced manufacturing pipeline. IIA has many technology patents and is a known leader in non-destructive examination and testing services that will contribute to this program and help the Danville area. We’re happy to be a part of this innovative team.”
