Complete Crane Inspections
Our inspection process includes a thorough inspection of all structural, mechanical and electrical components, as well as a partial proof test to ensure that mechanical and electrical brakes are functioning properly. While performing the inspections all gearboxes are checked for proper fluid levels. IIA inspectors will operate the crane through all motions to ensure that all safety devices, such as hoist limit switches, are working properly.
For California customers, every fourth year, a quadrennial proof test of 125% of the rated capacity will be applied in compliance with Cal-OSHA requirements. Once that inspection is completed, a computer-generated report will be created on site with recommendations for repairs. Cranes that pass the inspection will be issued a certification of compliance the same day.
All inspections are performed in compliance with applicable ANSI, state and federal regulations.
Common Issues with Cranes
Many issues can arise with overhead cranes — and IIA helps customers with all of them. Here are a few of the most common problems faced by crane owners:
- Alignment or skewing: Misalignment is one of the most common issues with a crane. If a misaligned crane is continuously operated, it can lead to further issues, such as over wear of the motor drive and extreme wear to the wheels and bearings.
- Bent or damaged hooks: Some crane components are also subject to extreme wear under certain conditions, such as hooks being overloaded. Depending on the design, a crane’s hook holds a load of a particular weight and is also designed to hold the load at a precise direction. If the integrity of the hook is compromised, the chance of it cracking or stretching is increased greatly, which means the load could potentially slip off of the hook.
- Damage or degradation to the wire rope. The integrity of a crane’s wire rope can be jeopardized by lack of lubrication, overuse, improper loads and corrosion. Wire rope should be inspected before each use, and if any damage is noticed the rope should be removed, replaced, and the damaged rope should be disposed of properly.
