Proud to be a Pioneer: IIA’s EMC Lab Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence
Congratulations to our Florida Lab Services team! 2026 marks 50 years of excellence in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and more.
Since 1976, when it was known as Timco Engineering, IIA’s Florida Test Lab has provided testing and certification of electronic devices emitting RF waves for compliance with the requirements of the Federal Communications Commission, Industry Canada, and the European Commission, and other regulatory bodies around the world.
While the company was incorporated in the state of Florida in July 1976, Timco Engineering actually got its start in Miami in January 1972 when the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began mandating that “receivers” obtain equipment certification. In 1996, Timco Engineering, Inc. was granted accreditation under what was then ISO Guide 25, and is now known as ISO/IEC 17025. Looking back on its rich history, Timco often found itself at the forefront of electronics testing. For example, in July 1981, Timco tested one of the first IBM “Acorn” personal computers and submitted a test report to the FCC.
In 2000, after the FCC established the Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB) program, Timco became one of the first organizations awarded the authority to issue Grants of Equipment Certification on behalf of the FCC. Other milestones include being one of the first labs to test and certify a white space device with the FCC. And in 2019, Timco issued the first FCC grant 5G mobile phone for Motorola z3 with moto mod — just one more example of many firsts in our Florida lab’s 50-year history. Drawn by Timco Engineering’s reputation as a leader, Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA) acquired the company in January 2018. Then and now, the resulting combination of IIA brands and technologies represent one of the most comprehensive portfolios available in the testing and inspection industry.
Today, as part of the IIA family, our Florida lab continues to offer a full range of EMC Testing & Certification Services and is always growing to better serve customers. In 2023, the lab moved from its home in Newberry, Florida, to a 15,000-square-foot state-of-the-art testing lab at San Felasco Tech City (SFTC) in Alachua, Florida. In recent years, our Florida lab has added SAR testing, shock and vibration testing, cybersecurity testing, and global market access (GMA) services, just to name a few. In April 2026, the lab received the first FCC grant for a Wi-Fi 8 Access Point. Over the years, testing done at our EMC lab has touched every corner of the world. Timco’s commitment to excellence remains a vital part of IIA’s success today, as our EMC team continues to be a pioneering partner in the rapidly evolving technology market.
