Ruby styli are the industry standard as the ideal stylus material for a vast majority of measurement applications. Ruby (both natural and synthetic) is one of the hardest minerals known to man (second only to diamond) with inherent characteristics that make it a nearly perfect material for use as a CMM stylus. Synthetic Ruby is made from 99% pure aluminum oxide that is lab-grown into crystals (or “boules”) at 2000 °C using the Verneuil process. The boules are then cut and are typically machined very gradually into a highly spherical shape.
Ruby is extraordinarily smooth on the surface, with fantastic compressive strength and resistance to abrasion. Due to these unique attributes, we were curious to see what a Ruby stylus looks like up close. If you have ever wondered the same, check out this close up image taken with our Nikon D800.
There are a number of important factors to consider when determining which stylus is best for your needs.
