Inspired by the opportunity to offer “selfless service,” Eugene “Eli” Moye enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school. It was a decision that served him well.
“I joined the military because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. It was by far the best decision I ever made,” says Eli, who grew up in Georgia and returned to his home state after retiring from the military in 2022. “I learned a lot from the military – how to treat people, how to lead people, and how to take care of people. It made me the man I am today.”
As a Motor Transport Operations Manager, Eli managed large fleets of vehicles and trained Marines for combat. His time in the military also sparked a lifelong interest in safety.
“My interest in safety started when I was deployed in the Marine Corps,” says Eli, who took on additional duties as Safety Officer. “I just always wanted to keep my Marines safe.”
After 23 years of service, Eli retired from the military. As he began the transition to civilian life, he carried his safety mission into his job search. When he learned about the culture of safety and camaraderie at Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA) — and the company’s mission of Making the World Safer — he knew his job search was over.
“When I spoke to CEO Chris Niebuhr, he talked about the brotherhood and sisterhood at IIA. Coming from the Marine Corps, that really spoke to me,” says Eli. “I’ve never seen an organization that took safety so seriously, and there is an amazing level of buy-in from executive leadership.”
As IIA’s Safety Manager, Eli travels to job sites across North America to connect with co-workers and talk about his favorite subject: safety.
“The thing I enjoy most about my job is meeting with employees, learning about the work they do, and getting their feedback on how to keep people safe,” he says. “It’s amazing when you can join an organization, bring to the table everything that you’ve learned, apply it, and see success.”
IIA employees work in some of the world’s most challenging industrial environments — from nuclear plants and bridges to construction sites, mines and more. The work they do, in the field and in the lab, has an immeasurable ripple effect on the safety of others.
“The work we do is inherently dangerous. But we go about it in a way that mitigates the hazards,” says Eli. “Beyond the safety of our own workers, we provide inspections that help keep people safe — from first responders to industrial workers to the general public.”
In his free time, this down-to-Earth Marine veteran loves to barbeque, attend sporting events and spend time with his four children. He has a way of speaking from the heart — and safety is never far from the conversation.
“I’m always talking with people about safety,” says Eli. “We laugh, we joke and at the end of the conversation, I always tell people to take care of themselves — because I care about them.”
