Discover the Power of Non-Destructive Dielectric TestingDielectric Testing

Dielectric testing (DT) is a non-destructive method of introducing an electrical current into an insulated component to assess its ability to resist high voltages and protect workers from electrical current.

IIA uses DT in the field to determine if insulated booms and controls on utility equipment, such as bucket trucks and digger derricks, are safe to operate in high-risk electrical areas.

We can test your equipment to confirm the integrity of electrical insulating sections and ensure conformance with applicable codes and standards. This ensures that when your employees are working near live power lines, they will be protected. IIA is capable of testing the following equipment:

  • Extendable Boom Aerial Devices
  • Aerial Ladders
  • Articulating Boom Aerial Devices
  • Vertical Towers
  • Digger Derricks

IIA's portable high-voltage testing equipment uses direct current (DC) to check your equipment for any unsafe current leakage.

Testing Standards

Our dielectric testing is performed in accordance with the following standards for category B and C equipment:

  • CSA C225‐10, ANSI/ASSE A10.31‐2006 and IEEE 978‐1984
  • CSA C225‐10 ‐ Vehicle Mounted Aerial Lifts
  • ANSI/ASSE A10.31‐2006 – Digger Derricks
  •  IEEE 978‐1984 ‐ Testing of Live‐Line Tools

IIA can provide on-site annual structural inspections and dielectric testing for a complete evaluation of your fleet to ensure compliance.

Acoustic Emissions

Acoustic emissions testing is performed on fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) components in place of dielectric testing. Steel components may also be monitored using this procedure as a guide to satisfy the requirements of ASTM F914 “Acoustic Emission for Insulated Aerial Personnel Devices.” Acoustic emission testing is a powerful method for examining behavior of materials deforming under stress.
