Justin Bogy’s RVI Expertise Makes “Impossible” Inspections Possible

Cool in a crisis and always willing to lend a hand, Justin Bogy, Operations Manager of our RVI Division, might be the first call you want to make when life throws a curve ball into your operations.

“The majority of calls we get are ‘My line’s backing up! When can you be here?,’” says Justin. “We often have to mobilize in a short amount of time — and we’ve always succeeded.”

Justin and his team offer remote visual inspections (RVI) that save customers time and money by delivering data without the need for disassembly or excavation. In terms of worker safety, RVI is invaluable because the Explosion Proof (EX) and Intrinsically Safe (IS) robotic devices gather critical information in areas that are impossible or unsafe for people to access — from tanks, tubes, and vessels to piping and rail cars.

A native of the Lone Star State, Justin first learned the ins and outs of RVI back in 2011, when he began working for Atlas Inspection Technologies — a small company with a big reputation.

“Atlas had a very good name in the RVI market and an impeccable safety record,” recalls Justin. “Our customers absolutely loved us.” That commitment to customers and their state-of-the-art RVI equipment — including intrinsically safe, explosion-proof cameras — quickly caught the eye of Industrial Inspection & Analysis. And so did Justin.

After joining IIA in 2018, Justin — a loyal guy by nature —brought several of his former Atlas co-workers on board. Business quickly went from good to great.

“Being able to use the same equipment and hire the guys I was working with before was a huge factor in me coming to IIA. We were able to hit the ground running — we all knew the process; and we all work super safe,” says Justin, who welcomed the opportunity to leverage IIA’s reputation as an inspection leader in many industries.

“What intrigued me about joining IIA was the different markets the company was already in,” he says. “We could keep doing what we were doing on the oil and gas side, which had always been very good, while adding in projects from other divisions to really ramp up RVI.”

While state-of-the-art technology drives the RVI business, it is the people that matter most to Justin.

“I really enjoy working with the same technicians I’ve worked with for years. I trust these guys 100% — they are the best at solving problems,” says Justin. “I really enjoy my clients as well. I work with so many good people.”

He works with some pretty special equipment as well.

IIA’s intrinsically safe, explosion-proof cameras can navigate tanks, tubes vessels and pipes with ease — from access points as small as one inch in diameter. We even have RVI equipment that can access openings as small as a quarter-inch.

“IIA is one of just a handful of companies in the U.S. that have explosion-proof capabilities, and that’s a necessity for many of our clients,” says Justin. “Our equipment gets us in the door, and our perfect safety record seals the deal. There are just not many people that do what we do.”

Due to the nature of their work, Justin and his team need to be ready to rally at a moment’s notice.

Such was the case when Williams Company, a leading pipeline operator, discovered liquid in the line during a large-scale maintenance project and reached out to IIA to identify the fastest way to ensure safety and restore operations.

With safety at risk — and downtime costs of $250,000 per day — time was of the essence. Within 48 hours, our team was able to use RVI to confirm that all liquids had been successfully removed from the pipeline, and any potential danger as well.

In another case involving a large paper mill, IIA was brought on board to perform required inspections of buried plant acid sewer piping. After identifying a number of cracks and joint separation, our team offered an emergency repair plan and a turnkey solution involving a cured-in-place pipe. By helping the customer avoid excavation, IIA saved the company millions of dollars.

“The work we do helps to keep our clients up and running and keep everybody safe from a personal and an environmental standpoint,” says Justin. “Helping our customers save millions of dollars is kind of normal for us. It’s always nice to walk away from a site knowing how much you’ve actually helped a client.”
