Always Getting Better

In 2010, Matt Murdock was thinking about a career change, and some of his friends encouraged him to join this industry, and boy is he glad they did. Matt’s dedication to his family is part of what landed him in this industry, because he knew he’d always be able to provide for them the way he wanted to. Coincidentally, Matt and his wife’s first child was born just one week after he entered the industry!

Starting as an Assistant, Matt went on to earn his Level II Certification and ran a truck for several years, after which he began simultaneously running his truck while coordinating and scheduling projects!

It’s no wonder that in a few short years, Matt was promoted into a management position and currently serves as the Regional Manager within IIA’s Field Services Division.

Matt’s day usually consists of project coordination, scheduling crews, and interacting with customers, which is not as easy as it may sound; Matt has to ensure that when a customer needs a truck and a crew on location, that the crew and truck are both available, but not just any crew.

Matt connects with the customer so he can understand all of the details, needs, and goals of the project. Then, armed with that information, he is able to put together the perfect team for his customer. He guarantees that the crew he sends consists of highly qualified and trained technicians with the specific certifications that the customer needs.

These are intricate and important details that must be correct from the get-go, and Matt has proven his worth in this area. His industry experience and connections coupled with his expert knowledge, means he knows how to look for and gather the best of the best in this industry. This may be his secret talent!

Matt takes care of coordinating projects like these every day and also handles customer quotes, bids, and follow-ups, which means being both in the office and out in the field walking jobs, connecting with customers, and conducting project pre-planning.

Matt says, “Being out in the field is important, because the best training in this industry comes from hands-on experience.” He tells us, “I don't ever want to do anything ‘just okay.’ I want to do everything to the best of my ability.” Matt tells us that “you get out what you put in,” and his advice for others is to have goals and be driven to succeed.

“When you develop and advance your skills, you’re always going to be better,” he remarks, and after learning more about Matt, it’s no surprise his views on success and his willingness to always learn new things have contributed to his professional growth. He believes the more you learn and know, the more valuable you can be to customers, and that will always be story-worthy.
